Story and Photography by Terry Check

Lisbon, the sun-soaked capital of Portugal, is a city where history, culture, and modern vibrancy blend seamlessly. From its cobbled streets lined with pastel-hued buildings to the sweeping vistas of the Tagus River, the city offers endless delights to explore. But with its famously hilly terrain and labyrinthine alleys, navigating Lisbon can be as challenging as it is enchanting. Enter the Tuk Tuk—a small, open-air vehicle that’s become the quintessential way to experience the city’s wonders.

Once a novelty in Lisbon, Tuk Tuk tours have skyrocketed in popularity in recent years, offering visitors a unique and convenient way to traverse its steep hills and tight corners. Unlike a traditional bus tour or a self-guided trek, a Tuk Tuk ride lets you soak in the sights, sounds, and aromas of the city in an intimate, up-close way. Whether you’re gliding past the majestic Belém Tower, winding through the historic Alfama district, or stopping to admire the intricate azulejos (ceramic tiles) that adorn countless façades, a Tuk Tuk transforms the act of sightseeing into a vibrant, interactive adventure.

What makes these tours even more appealing are the local guides who drive the Tuk Tuks. Passionate about their city, they weave fascinating tales about Lisbon’s history, culture, and hidden gems, adding depth to the journey. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, these personalized insights make each tour uniquely memorable.

In this article, we’ll take you on a Tuk Tuk journey through Lisbon, exploring the must-see landmarks, uncovering off-the-beaten-path treasures, and delving into the vibrant spirit of a city best experienced one cobblestone at a time. Buckle up—it’s time to see Lisbon like never before!

Masquerade Magazine travels to Lisbon, Portugal to experience the city’s charm with a Tuk Tuk adventure with Tiago Monteiro, General Manager, of Boost Portugal.

Masquerade “Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into operating Tuk Tuk tours in Lisbon?”

ECO Tuk Tuk “Absolutely, I’d love to share our story. We started Eco Tuk Tours with a vision to pioneer the use of electric Tuk Tuks in Lisbon, perfectly balancing the need to conquer the city’s steep hills while offering an eco-friendly travel option. We recognized a gap in the market for a service that combined the charm of local expertise with the convenience of sustainable transport. Our EcoTuks, guided by knowledgeable locals, offer an unmatched way to explore Lisbon’s hidden gems and local secrets, delivering incredible value for money and an unforgettable experience.”

Masquerade “What makes Tuk Tuk tours a unique way to experience Lisbon compared to other forms of transportation?”

ECO Tuk Tuk “What sets our EcoTuks tours apart is the unique combination of intimate, eco-friendly travel and expert local guidance. Unlike buses or cars, our electric Tuks can navigate Lisbon’s narrow streets and steep hills with ease, allowing us to take you to places that larger vehicles simply can’t reach. This means you get a more personal and comprehensive tour of the city, discovering hidden gems and local secrets that are often missed. Plus, our guides are passionate locals who share their insider knowledge, making each tour an authentic and enriching experience. It’s an immersive, sustainable way to truly connect with Lisbon.”

Masquerade “Can you describe the typical route and main landmarks included in your Tuk Tuk tour?”

ECO Tuk Tuk “Our typical Tuk Tuk tour offers a comprehensive exploration of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks and hidden treasures. Starting from the historic Baixa district, we navigate through the charming neighbourhoods of Alfama, Mouraria, and Graça. Key stops include the São Jorge Castle for its panoramic views, the Lisbon Cathedral, and the picturesque viewpoints of Nossa Senhora do Monte and Santa Luzia.

We then journey to Belém, where we visit three of Lisbon’s most important landmarks: the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower, and the Monument to the Discoveries. Along the way, our knowledgeable guides share fascinating stories and local insights, making each stop a memorable experience. This route provides a perfect blend of Lisbon’s rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking vistas.”

Masquerade “How do you select the landmarks and attractions featured in your tours?”

ECO Tuk Tuk “Selecting the landmarks and attractions featured in our tours is a meticulous process driven by our deep love for Lisbon and our commitment to showcasing its essence. We choose sites that offer a rich historical context, stunning visual appeal, and unique cultural significance. Our route includes both renowned landmarks, like the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower, and São Jorge Castle, and hidden gems known mostly to locals. This ensures our guests experience a well-rounded and authentic journey through Lisbon’s past and present, highlighting both iconic and off-the-beaten-path locations.”

Masquerade “Can you share a memorable or particularly special experience you’ve had while giving a tour?”

ECO Tuk Tuk “One particularly special experience that stands out occurred during a sunset tour with a family visiting from Australia. As we approached the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, the sky turned into a breathtaking canvas of vibrant colors. The family was visibly moved by the panoramic view of Lisbon bathed in golden light. Our guide shared stories of Lisbon’s history intertwined with personal anecdotes, including the story of the chapel at this viewpoint. It’s believed that São Gens lived there, preaching Christianity, and that the stone chair he sat on was miraculous. Pregnant women would sit on it, asking the saint for assistance in childbirth.

That day, the lady from the couple, who had been trying to get pregnant for many months, revealed she had discovered the night before that she was pregnant with twins. This story about the chapel moved both of them to tears of joy. The gratitude and joy expressed by the family reinforced our mission of creating unforgettable experiences through our eco-friendly Tuk Tuk tours.”

Masquerade “What are some of the traditional Portuguese dishes or treats that tourists get to try during the tour?”

ECO Tuk Tuk “During our Tuk Tuk tours, we ensure that tourists get a true taste of Lisbon by sampling some traditional Portuguese dishes and treats. Guests can enjoy iconic pastéis de nata (custard tarts) from renowned local bakeries, indulge in bifanas (savoury pork sandwiches), and savor petiscos (Portuguese tapas) such as chouriço (smoked sausage), bacalhau à brás (shredded codfish with onions and potatoes), and amêijoas à bulhão pato (clams in a garlic and cilantro sauce). We also include stops for enjoying Ginjinha, a traditional cherry liqueur, providing a comprehensive culinary experience that highlights the rich flavors of Portugal.”

Masquerade “Are there any hidden gem eateries or lesser-known food spots you include in your tours?”

ECO Tuk Tuk “Absolutely, our tours are designed to give you a taste of authentic Lisbon, including some hidden gem eateries. One such place is a typical tasca in Alfama, where the owner and waiter is also a fado singer who loves to tease men with improvised songs. Here, you can try Azeitão cheese and Portuguese pata negra presunto. Another hidden gem is a local restaurant in Graça, frequented only by Portuguese locals, known for its mixed fried fish and out-of-this-world ameijoas à bulhão pato. These spots provide a genuine and delicious slice of Lisbon life.”

Masquerade “Can you tell us about a typical day in the life of a Tuk Tuk tour operator in Lisbon?”

ECO Tuk Tuk “A typical day for a Tuk Tuk tour operator in Lisbon starts with preparing the vehicles and planning the day’s routes. The morning usually involves a tour through the historical center, including Alfama and Mouraria, with stops for snacks at local tascas where guests can enjoy Azeitão cheese and Portuguese pata negra presunto. For lunch, I like to have a leisurely break at one of the many terraces around Lisbon, where I can enjoy “mom’s” food straight from the pot while enjoying the sun. The afternoon is spent touring Belém, with majestic views of the Tagus River and iconic landmarks like the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower. The day often concludes with a stunning sunset tour, showcasing the reflection of yellow and orange hues on the river, leaving guests with unforgettable memories of Lisbon’s beauty.”

Masquerade “How do you adapt your tours to cater to different types of tourists, such as families, solo travelers, or food enthusiasts?”

ECO Tuk Tuk “We adapt our tours to cater to various types of tourists by tailoring the experience to their interests and needs. For families, we include interactive stops and kid-friendly anecdotes to keep everyone engaged. Solo travelers receive a more personalized experience, often with opportunities for deeper dives into specific interests like history or architecture. For food enthusiasts, we highlight local culinary gems, offering stops at hidden eateries to sample traditional Portuguese dishes. Our guides have such an accumulated knowledge of all the corners of the city, combined with experience at reading the group’s dynamic to adjust the tour to ensure everyone has a memorable and enjoyable experience.”

Masquerade “What safety measures do you take to ensure the well-being of your passengers during the tour?”

ECO Tuk Tuk “We prioritize safety by implementing several measures. Our Tuk Tuks are regularly maintained and inspected, with two dedicated mechanics and a self-owned workshop where we have in-depth knowledge of each vehicle. Our guides are among the most experienced, many with us for years. New guides undergo extensive training with our best storytellers. We provide seat belts, follow local traffic regulations strictly, and equip our Tuk Tuks with first aid kits. Additionally, we adhere to all regulations from Turismo de Portugal, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.”

Masquerade “How has the tourism landscape in Lisbon changed in recent years, and how has it impacted your Tuk Tuk tours?”

ECO Tuk Tuk “In recent years, Lisbon has seen a significant increase in tourism, attracting a more diverse range of visitors. This surge has positively impacted on our Tuk Tuk tours by increasing demand and allowing us to expand our offerings. We’ve adapted by creating more specialized tours, such as food-focused journeys and family-friendly routes. The rise in tourism has also led us to enhance our service quality, ensuring we meet the expectations of a global audience. Additionally, the emphasis on sustainability has aligned perfectly with our eco-friendly Tuk Tuks, making our tours even more appealing.

As a company, Ecotuk Tours is part of Boost Portugal company, we are taking bigger steps each year to improve across all three verticals of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance). This commitment includes enhancing our eco-friendly practices, supporting local businesses, being part of local communities and social institutions and ensuring transparent and ethical business operations.”

Masquerade “What advice would you give to someone visiting Lisbon for the first time and considering a Tuk Tuk tour?”

ECO Tuk Tuk “Let’s be honest, booking a tour with us at Boost Portugal and Ecotuk Tours is probably the best decision you can make to enjoy Lisbon! Our top tip? Begin your day with an e-bike tour to Belém along the scenic riverside Ciclovia—it can be done with us via Boost Portugal or Bikes and Company. Then switch to an eco Tuk Tuk tour in the city center in the afternoon, ending with a breathtaking sunset at one of Lisbon’s many viewpoints.” Masquerade Magazine wishes to thank Tiago Monteiro, General Manager, of Boost Portugal (www.boostportugal.com) providing not only Tuk Tuk Tours, but also, e-Bike, Segway, Walking Day, Spinach Tours and Arrabida By Boat.
